                                                                        DNA Homework

 

Task:  Your task is to create a 3D model of Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA).  Then, create an imaginary tour guide based on your DNA model.  Your brochure should be clear and concise so that “tourists” will have an accurate picture of what DNA looks like.  You are also going to need to keep tourist interested so you need to use creativity to design a 3D model of DNA along with a tour guide to lead everyone thru your model. 

 

POINTS:  THIS WILL COUNT AS A TEST GRADE!!

Directions:

1.            Build a 3 dimensional (3D) model of DNA in a double helix made out of 
any materials you wish.  The size can vary, but it needs to be large enough 
to be understood with the naked eye from the back of the room as well as 
small enough to fit through the door. It must be light enough to transport 
easily.  
 
2.            Your model does not need to have detailed chemical structures, but 
it must contain corresponding and consistent representations for all 
molecules involved. 
         Your model should include or have:
               a)  At least 10 nucleotides on each side
               b)  The four different nitrogenous bases (clearly distinguishable from 
               each other)
               c)  The different bonds (sugar-phosphate, sugar-nitrogenous base and the 
               hydrogen bonds between the nitrogenous bases) with each bond represented in a 
               different way. 
               d)  The sugar-phosphate backbone of DNA on each side of the helix- with 
               clear differentiation between the sugar and phosphate
       3.  Mark off at least 2 genes on your DNA model 
4.       You must also design a tour guide of your DNA out of 1 (8.5 x 11 piece of paper)  It should also be very creative and visual to enhance learning and keep the reader’s attention.  This is a GUIDE, not a report.  YOU ARE THE TOUR GUIDE!!  Your tour must correspond to your model.  This is not a tour of DNA; it is a tour of YOUR model of DNA.  
5.        A bibliography is also required to be on the back of your tour page.

Chromosomes are made up of DNA and found in the nucleus.  Genes are pieces of DNA, and most genes contain the information for making a specific protein and thus cells.
